Smolyan, Southern Bulgaria, May 8 (BTA) -- The Greek authorities are beginning the construction of a road to the future border crossing Roudozem-Xanthi, said Smolyan Regional Governor Nedyalko Slavov on Tuesday. He was speaking after a working meeting with the Greek partners at the site.

This week, the Greek road authority will sign an agreement with the contractor for the 9.5-km stretch from the border to the village of Dimario.

In May the Bulgarian authorities will open a bid for the construction of the border crossing facility, said Slavov. He forecast that at the current pace of work the road and the border crossing will likely be finished by the end of 2019.

Participating in the meeting were representatives of the Greek road administration, of the managing authority under the EU-backed programme which finances the road construction, the Bulgarian border police, the regional governor of Smolyan and representatives of the local authorities.
