An idea for biodegradable packaging for food products won the Panda Labs competition, said the organizers from WWF Bulgaria on Monday.
Five students from the Mathematics High School in Burgas proposed a biodegradable packaging made of chitosan (a water-soluble biopolymer with a chemical composition identical to that of cellulose), seeds and secondary waste from industrial hemp. To arrive at their environmentally sustainable proposal, the team worked on a case study related to the excessive use of plastic in the food industry.
The members of the winning team will receive start-up funding in the amount of BGN 7,000, which they will use to conduct initial tests and work on the creation of a prototype.
