The activities to deepen the water area between the two port terminals in Burgas [on the Black Sea coast] are expected to be completed by the end of July, said Port Infrastructure State Enterprise General Director Ivaylo Ivanov on Wednesday.

"The main goal of the project is to provide greater depths, which will lead to the arrival of larger vessels in Burgas, including container ships," said Ivanov. The planned depth of the project is nearly 16 metres and the masses that will be removed during dredging will be transported to predetermined locations. He specified that the dredging is being carried out in connection with the construction of a new shipping berth.

The project, which is managed by the private operator BMF Port Burgas, is financed by the European Union and is worth over BGN 70 million. The Bulgarian-Dutch Consortium Cosmos Van Oord DZZD acts as the contractor of the activities.

"The deepening activities that are currently being carried out are proof of the good symbiosis between state and business. This will lead to economic benefits for both the State and the region," noted Ivanov. After the completion of the activities, Burgas Port will be able to serve ships up to 280 meters in length.
