site.btaPlovdiv Theatre Production to Open Madách International Theatre Meeting in April

The Plovdiv Drama Theatre will open the 11th Madách International Theatre Meeting (MITEM) with the play Odyssey of director Diana Dobreva. Described as “visually stunning” on the MITEM website, the play will be seen April 6 at the National Theatre in Budapest, said the Plovdiv Drama Theatre. 

The scale and significance of the breakthrough of the Plovdiv Drama Theatre and of Diana Dobreva personally becomes clear against the background of the overall programme of the festival, which includes productions of the most significant names in world theater such as Rimas Tuminas, Jan Fabre, Alessandro Serra, Theodoros Terzopoulos, said the Plovdiv Drama Theatre.

Diana Dobreva created the epic rendition of Odyssey as the main event for Plovdiv when it was European Capital of Culture in 2019. The production also won the Award for performance and direction at the International Festival of Antique Drama Stobi in Veles, Republic of North Macedonia, in 2022.

A year ago, another production by Diana Dobreva and the Plovdiv Theater, The Silk, was included in the official selection of the Theatre Olympics in Hungary and was met with a standing ovation. Explaining the reason for the success of The Silk, playwright Alexander Sekulov, who is part of the Plovdiv Theater team, commented for BTA that Dobreva "manages to visualize invisible things such as inconsolable sorrow, unceasing love and self-sacrifice". 

Odyssey will be performed before the home audience against on February 22 and March 25, in the Great Hall of the Plovdiv Theater.
