Grandpa Kolyo's Tree
in Studena Village
Wins 2021 Tree with Roots Contest

Sofia, January 29 (BTA) - Grandpa Kolyo's Tree in the village of Studena won the title Tree with Roots 2021 in the 12th consecutive edition of the competition, the EcoObshtnost Foundation said.

In the online voting, the 350-year-old summer oak near the village of Studena, nominated by the Municipality of Svilengrad, received the most support and with 737 votes became the holder of the title for 2021.

The majestic century-old tree is located at the entrance of Studena and can be seen from the whole village. It is named after the owner of the fields where it grows - Nikola Angelov, known as Grandpa Kolyo, who after hard work rested under its thick shade. According to legend, the oak was part of a dense forest located in the land of today's village. Because of the forest and the passing river, its first inhabitants settled there - Bulgarians, hiding from the Turkish invasions. Grandpa Kolyo's tree is a symbol of Studena - it welcomes its residents and is a pillar of their Bulgarianness and faith.

The prize for the winner of the competition was provided by the Association of Arborists in Bulgaria, whose experts will inspect the tree and give recommendations for its care.

In the "Centuries-old Trees Speak" category, the winner is the Chuchur Plane Tree - a 350-year-old tree growing in the area of the same name in the centre of the village of Godeshevo, which took first place with 232 votes. Every year a large rope swing is lowered under the tree, on which people swing for health. In the past, fairs, weddings and sacrifices were held there, and fights were organized, which people from all the surrounding villages flocked to watch, the foundation explained.

In the additional category "Young Nature Lover" the jury awarded the students from the club Travelers in the Ethnography of Graovo at the Vasil Levski School and the Regional Youth Raise Centre in Breznik. They were awarded for their care for the hairy oak near the village of Breznishki Izvor, which the locals believe has miraculous and healing powers. For four years now, the young people have been regularly cleaning the place from the turbulent vegetation, and they intend to put up a sign.

This year the jury also awarded a special prize to the students from the Electronic Systems Technological School at the Technical University of Sofia, Henry Ford Vocational School of Transport and Energy and 32nd High School St. Kliment Ohridski in Sofia. They sent the story of their spruce tree, which is the first tree they planted as part of their Collect4life initiative, which aims to collect and recycle phones and use the money to plant trees, the foundation said.

Grandpa Kolyo's tree in the village of Studena became a finalist and the Bulgarian representative in the international competition 2022 European Tree of the Year. It will start on February 1 and will include a total of 16 countries with their national winning trees. Online voting will continue throughout the month at www.treeoftheyear.org. The foundation relies on the support of all to help the Bulgarian oak to take a worthy place among the favorite trees of the people from the Old Continent. DT
