site.btaMedics from Trakia University Offer Free Multi-Disciplinary Health Screenings in Albania
Lecturers and students from the Medical College of Trakia University in Stara Zagora took part in the first health charity initiative in Albania. Within two days they carried out the first of its kind free multi-disciplinary health checkup among the Bulgarian community in the northern Albanian municipality of Kukes, the director of the Medical College, Assoc. Prof. Pavlina Teneva, said at the BTA press club in Stara Zagora. The medics conducted bone density tests, clinical and laboratory peripheral blood tests with rapid tests for cholesterol, uric acid and blood sugar, as well as eye examinations.
The charity initiative was held at the invitation of Bulgarian Ambassador to Albania Ivaylo Kirov. Dozens of people who swarmed the healthcare centre in Kukes, live in remote places of the northern Albanian municipality, in villages where there is no doctor, the organizers said. They added that this will not be the last initiative related to the Bulgarian diaspora in different countries.
The total number of people who identify themselves as Bulgarians in Albania is more than 7,000, according to the country's latest census.
