The European Parliament will vote Thursday in Strasbourg on a motion of no confidence in the European Commission under the presidency of Ursula von der Leyen. The vote will be open, and the vote will be successful if it receives a two-thirds majority of the votes cast.

So far, there have been eight votes of no confidence in the EC in the history of the EP, and none of them has gathered the necessary majority. This is the first vote against a commission under von der Leyen's leadership. The vote is related to the fact that the EC President did not provide access to the messages exchanged with a representative of the vaccine manufacturer Pfizer for the supply of over a billion doses for several billion EUR during the Covid pandemic.

In the debate on the vote on Monday, von der Leyen noted that representatives of all EU countries participated in the negotiations for the supplies. It is a lie that no EU country knew about the contracts, prices or quantities, she added, addressing the MEPs. The vote was tabled by Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea from the European Conservatives and Reformists group. Von der Leyen argued that this step is supported by enemies of the EU, among whom she named Russia.
