Elections organized under the dictatorship of Aleksandr Lukashenko cannot in any way be recognized by democratic countries, Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev (GERB/EPP) told journalists here Monday, commenting on the presidential elections in Belarus.

Belarusian media reported on Sunday that President Lukashenko was re-elected for a seventh term in office.

In Kovatchev's words, European institutions, EU Member States, and the democratic world do not recognize these elections and will not recognize Lukashenko as president. The elections are illegitimate. The European Parliament recognizes Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya as president; the current head of State is an usurper who cannot possibly be recognized, Kovatchev said.

The Bulgarian MEP attended an event dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day, organized at the House of Europe in Sofia.
