The Lok Sabha election results indicated that the Indian National Congress (INC) and its opposition coalition, INDIA, exceeded analyst expectations, as observed by BTA's Nikolay Velev.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to secure a 400-seat supermajority for the Bharatiya Janata Party, setting out to win 370 out of 545 seats in the lower house of parliament. INC might pose a potential challenge to this goal.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has been hard at work to surpass the majority threshold of 272 votes during the vote count. The party is likely to need coalition support to form a government. As of 6:12 pm local time, the Bharatiya Janata Party has secured 240 seats, outpacing INC, which won 99 seats.
The nation set a global record with 642 million voters, including 312 million women, participating in the elections. Since 2004, India has used offline electronic voting machines, stored securely post-use. On vote counting day, they are unsealed with all political party representatives present.
The Lok Sabha elections decide 543 members of parliament, plus 2 presidential appointees. A minimum of 272 seats secures a majority. Parliament chooses the Prime Minister, who is also the Leader of the House.
In the 2019 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 303 out of 543 seats, while INC won 52 seats.
BTA's special correspondent visited the New Delhi office of the Bharatiya Janata Party during the Lok Sabha vote tallying. The electoral commission is set to release the official results later on Tuesday.
