Bulgaria's highest ranked male and female players, Grigor Dimitrov and Viktoriya Tomova, lost in their Wednesday matches in tournaments in China. Dimitrov suffered a 3-6 6-3 4-6 defeat from world No. 65 Jakub Mensik in the eight-finals of an ATP 1000 competition in Shanghai, while Tomova lost 1-6 2-6 to world No. 4 Coco Gauff in the second round of the WTA 1000 event Wuhan Open.

Tomova broke Gauff's first serve game but quickly lost control over the match. The win in the first round secured her 35 ranking points and she is likely to remain in top 50 after this week.

Dimitrov scored more winners (30-27) and fewer double faults (3-6) but his opponent served better for the win.
