Bulgaria at the Olympics:
Tihomir Ivanov Fails to Meet
High Jump Qualifiers

Tokyo, July 30 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - Tihomir Ivanov failed to pass the high jump qualifiers at the Tokyo Olympic Athletics Tournament.

The 27-year-old Bulgarian achieved a modest 2.17 metres and remained in 26th place in the final standings.

No one managed to meet the qualification norm of 2.30 metres, and thus the top 13 competitors with 2.28 metres each qualified for the final.

Tihomir Ivanov said that he had health problems in the last three weeks before the Olympics and that this had an impact on his performance in the high jump at the Tokyo Games. He said he did not feel bad, but that the last 20 days have been really difficult for him.'' I'm an athlete after all, I'm not a robot. As much as we don't want to sometimes, we have to leave defeated, not as winners,'' Ivanov said. ''That's why, as sad as it is for me, I leave with my head held high, even though I performed poorly, because these are heights I have reached many times". RI/DT
