Bulgaria at the Olympics:
Bulgarian Olympic Committee Expresses Gratitude
to Legend Maria Grozdeva at Her Last Olympics

Tokyo, July 30 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - The Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) celebrated in Tokyo on Friday the end of the competitive career of Bulgarian sport shooting legend Maria Grozdeva.

BOC Secretary General Belcho Goranov recalled the memorable successes of Grozdeva, who won five Olympic medals (a record for a Bulgarian athlete), two of which were gold, 12 European titles, a total of 29 medals from continental championships and 18 World Cup victories.

"I express my gratitude to Maria for what she has given to Bulgarian sports and the Olympic movement. She remains in history as one of the greatest, as Bulgaria's ambassador and an example for young people," Goranov said at a brief ceremony at the Asaka shooting range. Grozdeva finished 27th in the 25-metre pistol competition in her seventh and last Olympics, a record number for a Bulgarian athlete.

On her part, Grozdeva thanked everyone who contributed to her success over the decades and has been with her. After 38 years and 90 awards from major competitions, she put her gun in its holster and put an end to her phenomenal sports career. RI/DT
