Protest for Weightlifter Hristo Hristov
Wronged by Jury at Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo, August 4 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - The Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation Wednesday came out with a protest that weightlifter Hristo Hristov was wronged by the jury at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and will also refer the case to the Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

Bulgarian weightlifter Hristo Hristov said he feels robbed after the jury's decision deprived him of the bronze medal in the men's 109 kg Group A event on Tuesday. The 20-year-old youth world champion's last clean&jerk attempt at 222 kg was initially considered successful but two reviews later, the jury marked it as a failed attempt. Hristov thus remained fifth, only two kilograms away from the bronze.

In its position the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation says it definitely disagrees with what happened with Hristov.

The Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation considers the International Weightlifting Federation responsible for the developments and should react to the way in which the head of the jury, as well as the whole referee team in this event, made their decision. The indignation also arises from the fact that in the course of the event the referees demonstrated different criteria and bias, adjudging good attempts in the same situations with other weightlifters. Therefore, the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation says it does not accept the arguments with which Hristov's last attempt was pronounced failed.

The Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation says the main principles of sports competition have been violated, i.e. fair play, equal start and equality of the participants, which is why it will turn to the International Olympic Committee and will send IWF and official protest, insisting on a reaction on the case. Result, not referee commitments, secretive lobbies and policies, should be decisive in sports, the position says.

Just minutes after the event on Tuesday BOC President Stefka Kostadinova called Hristov to congratulate him on his participation.

Also, BOC issued a statement that it does not accept the arguments on which Hristov's last attempt was pronounced failed. BOC expressed its strong indignation at the way in which weightlifter Hristo Hristov was denied the opportunity to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

BOC Secretary General Belcho Goranov will file an official complaint to IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell./RI/BR
