A Bulgarian project for the production of energy storage batteries has been granted strategic status under the European Commission’s Net-Zero Industry Act and the EU’s clean technology initiative, Economy and Industry Minister Peter Dilov said in a press release on Tuesday. Dilov took part in a ministerial meeting within the European Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance in Brussels.

The meeting focused on the measures taken by EU Member States to support the demand for sustainable batteries and solar photovoltaic systems, as well as to facilitate implementation of the Net-Zero Industry Act.

Minister Dilov said that Bulgaria attaches great importance to initiatives promoting both local battery production and recycling. He noted that integrating renewable energy with modern energy storage systems will be key to ensuring grid stability and balancing electricity supply and demand.

Dilov added that his Ministry had supported the quest for innovative batteries by giving a high rating to the first Bulgarian project for an innovative energy storage system under the Net-Zero Industry Act.

The Minister said that the project, BG EXERON X-BESS, has already been listed in the European Commission’s public register of strategic projects and is one of six projects selected across Europe in the field of battery and energy storage technologies.

"The production will put Bulgaria on the world map for battery energy storage technologies, fully aligned with the objectives of the regulation on secure and sustainable supply of net-zero technologies, including by scaling up the manufacturing capacity of net-zero technologies and their supply chains," Dilov said.
