The European Parliament (EP) Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Subcommittee on Tax Matters are expected on Tuesday to take a vote on a draft EP report on Bulgaria’s preparedness to join the euro area on January 1, 2026.
The draft version of the report says that the EP approves of a European Commission recommendation to admit the country into the euro area. Bulgaria’s accession will send a strong political message about the appeal of the single European currency, it says.
The procedure does not envision any additions to the draft. EP Rapporteur Eva Maydell recommends Bulgaria to adopt the euro as its national currency on January 1, 2026. The document is due for definitive endorsement on July 8. Later in the day, the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) will vote on the last set of legal texts to admit Bulgaria to the euro area.
Last week, Bulgaria received unanimous support from the Eurogroup and ECOFIN for its euro area membership bid. A position from the European Council is expected at the end of this week.
