Agriculture and Food Minister Georgi Tahov has endorsed a National Action Plan for the Development of Organic Production until 2030. Tahov's deputy Lozana Vasileva broke the news at the opening of the 9th National Conference on Organic Farming in Bulgaria, held within the AGRA 2025 exhibition in Plovdiv, as quoted by her ministry on Thursday.

The conference discussed market opportunities for organic farming and the possibility for the sector's accelerated development. It was organized by the Bulgarian Organic Products Association and the Bioselena Foundation under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Vasileva said the action plan is based on the European Commission's three main pillars for organic production while taking into account relevant developments in Bulgaria. It aims to increase the acreage of certified organic farm fields and the number of organic production operators, boost consumer confidence in organic produce, expand the national market in such produce and promote the organic transition. The implementation of the plan will help achieve sustainability in agriculture and encourage organic production in Bulgaria, she said.

The Ordinance on Eco Requirements for Particular Products Subject to Public Procurement, promulgated in the State Gazette last July, was drawn up with active contribution from the Agriculture and Food Ministry, Vasileva noted. The ordinance adds organic foods to the scope of the minimum requirements of the Public Procurement Act. The share of organic products in public procurement is to be increased from 2% in 2024 to at least 10% in 2031, she added.

She underscored the importance of international trade fairs such as Biofach and the Green Week for promoting Bulgarian organic produce on international markets. She said her ministry creates possibilities for stronger presence of Bulgarian organic foods in international trade.

During the conference, experts of the Agriculture and Food Ministry and State Fund Agriculture presented novelties related to farmer aid and sectoral requirements. They participated in the discussion and took questions from people. Over 160 persons attended the event.
