Nearly half of the newly registered cars in the European Union (EU) in 2023 were electric or hybrid, Eurostat said on its website on Friday.

In 2023, 10.7 million new cars were registered in the EU. Among these, petrol-powered internal combustion engine vehicles accounted for the largest share (34.5%), followed by petrol-electric non-plug-in hybrids (21.1%), fully electric vehicles (14.5%), and diesel-powered cars (14.3%).

Between 2013 and 2023, electric vehicles have shown rapid growth. The combined market share of hybrids and electric vehicles has nearly matched that of internal combustion engine cars, with figures at 48.3% and 48.8%, respectively.

In nine EU member countries, the share of hybrids and electric vehicles in 2023 exceeds 50% among new registrations. The highest is in Finland at 78%, with 44% of them being hybrids and 34% electric. Sweden follows in the ranking with a share of 69% (30% hybrids and 39% electric) and the Netherlands at 68% (37% hybrids and 31% electric).

In Bulgaria, the share of hybrid and electric vehicles was only 8%, with 3% being hybrids and 5% fully electric.
