Electricity production in Bulgaria dropped by 5.65% from January 1 to December 1, 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, the Electricity System Operator said on its website on Tuesday. A total of 34,265,398 MWh were produced this year, compared to 36,318,859 MWh in 2023.

From January 1 to December 1, 2024, electricity consumption in this country increased by 0.54%, with 33,160,288 MWh consumed this year, compared to 32,982,692 MWh in 2023.

The share of the energy produced by baseload capacities in Bulgaria's energy balance decreased by 12.29% and stood at 25,218,125 MWh for the period January-December 2024, compared to the same period of 2023.

The electricity balance (export-import) went down by 66.87% at 1,105,110 MWh, the ESO added.

The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network increased by 34.20% over the reporting period, while the increase of the share of RES in the distribution network was 34.29%. The largest growth was seen in electricity generated by photovoltaic power plants, which increased by 62.13% in the transmission network and 57.81% in the distribution network.

There was a 4.03% decrease in electricity generated by hydroelectric power plants for the period January 1 - December 1, 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, the ESO said.
