Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 44,064.1 million (44% of GDP) at end-June 2024, growing by EUR 316.6 million (0.7%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 43,747.6 million, 46.6% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) reported on Friday.

By June 30, short-term liabilities equalled EUR 8,309.2 million (18.9% of the total debt, 8.3% of GDP), growing by EUR 145.7 million (1.8%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 8,163.5 million, 18.7% of the total debt, 8.7% of GDP).

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 35,754.9 million (81.1% of the total debt, 35.7% of GDP) at end-June 2024, growing by EUR 170.8 million (0.5%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 35,584.1 million, 81.3% of the total debt, 37.9% of GDP).

Gross external liabilities with remaining maturity over one year totalled EUR 26,106.4 million (59.2%) at end-June 2024.

At end-June 2024, 79.8% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euros, compared with 80.6% at end-June 2023.

General government's gross external debt 4 totalled EUR 10,306.6 million (10.3% of GDP) at end-June 2024, growing by EUR 858.8 million (9.1%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 9,447.8 million, 10.1% of GDP).

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 2,010.8 million (2% of GDP), increasing by EUR 44.1 million (2.2%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 1,966.7 million, 2.1% of GDP).

The external liabilities of other banks and money market funds totalled EUR 6,939.6 million (6.9% of GDP), growing by EUR 158.3 million (2.3%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 6,781.3 million, 7.2% of GDP).

Other sectors' external debt equalled EUR 12,224.6 million (12.2% of GDP), increasing by EUR 400.2 million (3.4%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 11,824.4 million, 12.6% of GDP.

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 12,582.6 million (12.6% of GDP) at end-June 2024, decreasing by EUR 1,144.9 million (8.3%) from end-June 2023 (EUR 13,727.5 million, 14.6% of GDP). It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 28.6% at end-June 2024, compared with 31.4% in end-June 2023.
