The National Statistical Institute (NSI) reports over 60% growth in prices of food and non-food items in Bulgaria for the 2012 – 2023 period. NSI published Friday a study on the average prices and purchased quantities of main foods and non-foods by households by year for the 2012 – 2023 period.

The data show that a kilogram of white bread cost BGN 1.29 on average in 2012 and BGN 2.44 in 2023. With its annual income, the average Bulgarian household could buy 3,287 kilograms of white bread in 2012 and 4,418 kilograms in 2023. A woman with her annual household income could buy 129 pairs of shoes in 2012 and 221 pairs in 2023.

For the 2012 - 2023 period, the nominal income and expenditure average per capita increased almost twice. The price index increased by 61.4% for the same period. The price index is calculated on the basis of the data from the household budgets consumer basket, that includes 117 positions for foods and 45 for nonfoods.

The index of the real total household income for the surveyed period increased by 77.3% in 2023 in comparison to the base year 2012 and the index of the real total expenditure increased by 75.1%.

In 2023, compared to 2022, the real income increased by 10.0%, the real expenditure - by 9.4% and the prices increased by 9.1%.
