The lowest average pension in Bulgaria is calculated in the southern town of Kardzhali (BGN 676.60) and the highest - in Sofia (BGN 1,009.42) according to data of the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) for the first quarter of 2024.

After Kardzhali, the lowest pension is in Razgrad (682.53 BGN), Silistra (691.52 BGN) and Targovishte (692.52 BGN). The average pension is 857.21 BGN for pensioners in the Sofia region, and just over 900 BGN in Burgas and Pernik. In Varna, Vratsa, Kyustendil, Plovdiv, Smolyan, Stara Zagora, and Yambol the pensions are over BGN 800.

There are 2,040,181 pensioners in Bulgaria. In May, the NSSI voted to update all pensions granted until the end of December 2023 by 11%.
