Nearly 400,000 and 140 municipalities in remote areas will be given access to 1 Gbps fiber broadband and 5G coverage, the Transport and Communications Ministry said on Friday.

The Finance Ministry and the Transport Ministry concluded an agreement for investment implementation under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Nearly BGN 470 million will be invested to build and improve connectivity in remote and sparsely populated areas.

According to global rankings for 2023, Bulgaria ranks eighth in the world and third in Europe by the average speed of mobile Internet, whereas in terms of global fixed network access ranks 66th. These indicators will improve significantly after the implementation of the project.

Under the project the network of the public administration will be completed too, which is operated by the Executive E-government Infrastructure Agency. It will span all 265 municipalities. Its capacity will be increased in order to improve access to administrative services. The border crossings will be connected too and additional networks will ensure that the service is uninterrupted.
