A roundtable discussion on "More Opportunities for Women in Intellectual Property", organized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in collaboration with the US Chamber of Commerce, was held in Geneva on July 10, Bulgaria's Patent Office said on Tuesday.

The forum was attended by Bulgaria's Patent Office President Prof. Vladya Borisova at the invitation of Kathi Vidal, USPTO Director. Global leaders in the field of intellectual property discussed current initiatives to recruit more inventors from underrepresented groups in the innovation ecosystem.

Prof. Borisova was among the six speakers at the roundtable. She presented the international audience some of Bulgaria's most inspiring female inventors, listed in the Patent Office's Golden Book, whose achievements are mainly in the fields of medicine and cosmetics.

"In 2022, 24% of patent applications were filed by female inventors or co-inventors. In electronics, this [number] accounted for 34.5% of [all] applications. In chemistry, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, applications [by females] accounted for 45% of the total. In mechanics, women are the least represented – 9%. We observe a positive trend for increasing the number of women inventors" Borisova also said during the discussion.
