Socialist leader Kornelia Ninova urged the government to cap the prices of foods to end profiteering. "The measures for containing food prices that the government announced are not going to do the job. The solution is capping the prices of products in the consumer basket," Ninova wrote in a Facebook post.
She believes that the cap should cover the production cost plus a 10% profit margin. "Anything higher than that is profiteering. You don't fight profiteering with the information site but with an iron hand. See what the Greek government did: it capped prices and whoever went higher, had their licence for production and trade revoked. The results are visible there," said Ninova.
Prime Minister Galab Donev announced Tuesday that the government is setting in place a mechanism for monitoring and control of prices along the supply chain from the producer to the supermarket. He said that they are not going to interfere on the free market and violate the rules of free competition and fair trade practices.
