Major global manufacturers and suppliers of rolling stock and on-board equipment have submitted indicative proposals for the acquisition of new trains, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said. This is the largest order initiated under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The total number of proposals received by the June 30 deadline was 32. Proposals were received from companies such as Alstom, CAF, Hyundai Rotem, PESA Bydgoszcz, Siemens Mobility, Skoda Transportation, Stadler Rail, Fabryka Pojazdow Szynowych - FPS Poznan, KONCAR - Electric vehicles Inc., Thales, Talgo, Express Service, Vossloh Locomotives GmbH, CZ LOKO a.s. and CRRC Corporation Limited.

After a detailed examination of all proposals, the Transport Ministry will announce public procurements under the five invitations with a total value of BGN 1.7 billion. It is expected that by the middle of 2026, Bulgaria will have a renewed railway fleet of the latest generation.

This type of market research is being conducted for the first time by the Ministry of Transport, and its purpose is to achieve maximum transparency and efficiency in the use of public resources, as well as to attract the best Bulgarian and international companies to participate, the Ministry said.

By order of Transport Minister Nikolay Sabev, the same approach will be applied by the National Company Railway Infrastructure for both of the company's projects approved under the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience. They are for construction of an intermodal terminal in Ruse and for the implementation of an European Rail Traffic Management System (a single European signalling and speed control system that ensures interoperability of the national railway systems) level 2, in the Ruse - Kaspichan railway section.
