Bulgaria’s membership in the euro area is not a final goal but the beginning of a journey that the country will take together with its partners in the common currency zone. The euro area is not only an advantage but also a responsibility, and Bulgaria must continue to maintain the sustainability of its public finances and this commitment remains unchanged going forward, Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova told a press conference within the framework of a high-level conference, titled “Bulgaria on the Doorstep of the Eurozone.”
The event, organized by the Finance Ministry and the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), is part of the communication campaign for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria as of January 1, 2026, and is taking place at the Boyana Residence.
Joining Minister Petkova at the press conference was European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis.
The forum “Bulgaria on the Doorstep of the Eurozone” was also attended by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Bulgarian National Bank Governor Dimitar Radev, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe (via videoconference), European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, and European Stability Mechanism Managing Director Pierre Gramegna.
