Nearly 300,000 Bulgarians in the country and abroad participated in the second Reading Day, which took place on November 15, the event’s organizers said. The initiative was first held in 2023, bringing together some 180,000 readers and listeners.
In 2024, the event involved 1,078 schools, 238 libraries and community centres, 438 kindergartens, nearly 30 Bulgarian schools abroad, and some 120 organizations, including municipalities, universities, bookshops and publishers, child and elderly care centers, radio stations, and companies across various sectors. Reading sessions were held in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the United States, the UK, Turkiye, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, among others. Reading Day events will continue throughout the week.
The initiative is part of the plans to promote reading set out in the National Reading Pact established on November 17, 2023. The initiative is included in Sofia Municipality's 2024 Cultural Events Calendar and is held under the auspices of the Education and Science Ministry. Partners include the Global Libraries Bulgaria Foundation, the Bulgarian Library and Information Association, the Bulgarian Book Association, the BookMark digital marketing agency, and Ploshtad Slaveikov.
