The 3rd International Watercolour Biennial, which kicked off at Sofia's Nuance Art Gallery on Wednesday evening, features 14 artists from seven countries.

"To me, the exhibition is inspiration and peacefulness," curator Evgenia Matsureva told BTA. "Looking at the paintings, I forget about all problems, and it pleases me so much."

The artists contributing to the third edition are familiar to the gallery management either personally or via other artists, Matsureva said.

She is from Russia. "When I lived in Moscow before moving to Bulgaria, I did master classes for these artists and I know them personally, I know their works, and so I invite them. The space in the gallery is limited and we cannot invite 50 people, we choose a small number each time," Matsureva says. She asks the artists to send works of theirs, and those that fit the exhibition best are selected.

"The idea is to pick their best works while at the same time keeping an eye on diversity," she said. The curator does not require the painters to contribute on a single theme. "Many painters do only landscapes, others do mainly portraits," she noted.

Her husband Atanas Matsurev is taking part in the International Watercolour Biennial for the third time. "The idea is to show the diversity and the possibilities of watercolour painting and the various schools associated with it around the world. Different techniques are used in different places," he said.

Svetlin Sofroniev is taking part in the biennial for the first time. He says he has contributed his most recognizable paintings, which include urban and marine landscapes.

The artists featured in the 3rd International Watercolour Biennial are from Australia, Italy, Moldova, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and Bulgaria. The exhibition will be on until October 20.
