The 40th edition of the Apollonia Festival of Arts in Sozopol opened on Thursday evening.

In his address President Rumen Radev said: "It is no coincidence that every year, for four decades now, Sozopol has managed to bring together the best of Bulgarian culture and arts. I express my deep gratitude to Margarita Dimitrova and Prof. Dimo Dimov who founded this amazing cultural event. I thank the Mayor of Sozopol Tihomir Yanakiev and the municipal leadership, as well as all the partners of the cultural forum who give us the opportunity to experience this event," the President said. "Thanks to your energy, professionalism and dedication, Apollonia continues its mission to be a crossroads of traditions and new achievements of the present and the future, to be a formula of the established and the emerging Bulgarian creativity," he added.

"It is naive to think that we will recover from this crisis when one party will overwhelmingly prevail over all others, or when we wait for some miraculous assemblage", he said. The solution, he said, is to rally around sound values. "People of culture and the arts build the value system of society," President Radev added.

After his remarks Radev handed a plaque named after Sts Cyril and Methodius to the organizers of the Apollonia Festival of Ats on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Festival for their "consistent efforts and preservation of the native traditions in the arts and the significant contribution of the initiative to the development and enrichment of Bulgarian culture."

The festival will run until September 7 with more concerts, films, plays, exhibitions and literary events.

The Apollonia Festival of Arts is organized by the Apollonia Foundation established in 1991. The festival first took place in 1984. It aims to preserve cultural traditions and support new talent in the arts, said the organizers. BTA is a media partner of the event.
