Award-Winning British Actor Paul Goodwin Brings His One-man Macbeth to Southern Bulgaria Village

Paul Goodwin, Artistic Director of the award-winning Shakespeare Edit Theatre Company will perform in a one-man version of Macbeth on the open-air stage of the primary school in the southern Bulgarian village of Patalenitsa Friday evening. The performance is part of the events marking the 25th anniversary of the Patalenitsa amateur Shakespeare Company.

At a news conference at the National Press Club of BTA in Pazardzhik on Friday, Goodwin said that he has been working on this production for two years. He brings it to Patalenitsa after a long journey in Italy, the US, the UK and Latvia.

The actor is Artistic Director of the award-winning Shakespeare Edit Theatre Company.

The one-man Macbeth was created by Goodwin in collaboration with Ukrainian composer Dmitry Saratsky. It won the award for Best International Performance at the United Solo Theater Festival in New York in 2023.

Goodwin, an actor, teacher and director specializing in classical text, particularly the work of Shakespeare, has worked with the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The organizer of the event is Patalenitsa's Petrovden Shakespeare Company. 

The show will have subtitled for those who don't speak English. Also, it is not suitable for viewers under the age of 16, said Inna Tserovska, the manager of the Petrovden theatre company, told the press that

"Theatre is an art for people in theatres but in Patalenitsa we have had so many viewers, actors and directors in the past 25 years," she said of the village theatre company. "Children were born, people got together and parted ways. Life was happening under the stars. For us, theatre under the stars is a cause," Tserovska said during the news conference at the BTA press club.

She also said that digitization has helped the local theatrical community link with like-minded people across the world and see what they do. "It also helped us get in touch with London and work work with different people - until we came to this moment."

Konstantin Elenkov, an actor and director, said during the news conference that the Patalenitsa theatre is "a cause for enlightening people's souls". "It creates small worlds for people," he added.
