An exhibition of works by sculptor Pavel Koychev opened at Sofia's Rakursi Gallery on Tuesday on the occasion of the gallery's 20th anniversary. On display are early works in bronze, from 1990-91, which Koychev picked himself for the occasion. Some of those have evolved over the years in different materials, scale and context, the gallery said.
In introductory remarks at the exhibition's opening, the head of BTA's LIK Department for Literature, Art and Culture, Georgi Lozanov, said that the works on display are something of a calling card for the artist "because they show an essential feature of his art: the ability to reconcile his plastic gift with conceptual thinking". "The space in Pavel Koychev's work seems to be born inside the plastic form and then comes out, projects itself outside and returns to become inhabitable, get filled with noises, details and life," said Lozanov.
