Exhibition of Antiquity Mirrors Opens in Burgas Archeological Museum

The latest exhibition of the Archeological Museum in Burgas is dedicated to International Women's Day, March 8, said Gergana Danabasheva, tour guide at the museum, on Tuesday. The exhibition will show small votive mirrors from the period between the 2nd and 4th centuries found in the Burgas region, which were restored specially for the occasion, said Danabasheva.

She explained that the lead frame of the antiquity mirrors is almost always decorated with geometric or floral motifs, while on the backside special phrases are usually written with ancient Greek inscriptions. Among the inscriptions are You are beautiful, Beautiful things suit beautiful women, A gift for the mistress, and others. These inscriptions indicate that the mirrors were most likely votive offerings by women to goddesses to grant a wish. On the occipital frame of one of the mirrors shown, a female figure is clearly noticeable, most likely of one of the female deities.

Danabasheva said that the exhibition will remain open at least until the summer, with the possibility that it will become a permanent part of the exposition of the museum. In the museum's permanent exhibition, visitors can also see perfume bottles, called Lacrymaria, as well as Unguentarium. Some women used such containers to store mascara or other scented oils.
