site.btaPainter Gredi Assa Celebrates 70th Jubilee with Exhibition

The Sofia City Art Gallery will unveil Gredi Assa's exhibition entitled Travels on February 27. Assa, who celebrated his 70th birthday on January 29, told BTA that he thought this exhibition would help him find himself.

The event, curated by Ivo Milev in partnership with Sofia City Art Gallery, will be open to the public until May 5.

While the artist did turn 70 at the end of January, he chose to skip any lavish celebrations, because he didn't want to "bother anyone". He believes the best way to celebrate is to invite friends at an exhibition, which is why he organized Travels. For his birthday, he said that all he wishes for is good health, as "The rest I can paint for myself."

The exhibition

The artist shared with BTA: "I thought that's how I would get to know myself. Because one usually gets to know oneself on the road. What happened to them, their vicissitudes, and the events that followed or that lied ahead - one begins to change. In my case, the opposite happened. I got to know the museums, the libraries, all this plastic art, which made me really amazed me, enchanted me, and above all, drew me like a magnet to fine art."

Other than paintings, the event will include a video comprised of thousands of sketches that Assa has drawn throughout his lifetime.
