Cellist Gautier Capucon returned to Sofia to present the Bulgarian premiere of the Cello Concerto by legendary Hollywood composer Danny Elfman. Elfman himself was also Sofia and at the end of the concert he went on stage along with Capucon.

The orchestra, Sofia Philharmonic, was conducted by maestro Nayden Todorov.

Capucon was called back four times by the audience in the hall with sustained applause but did not perform an encore.

"Danny Elfman's Cello Concerto is a work we've been looking forward to since last year. Sofia Philharmonic took part in the commission for its creation. The wait was worth it because Gautier Capucon came to present it in Sofia. The work is emotional, meditative, and extremely immersive. Its impact is hard to compare with anything familiar. It is amazing that a modern composer can write a work that has such an impact," music journalist Dimitar Sotirov commented to BTA.

"The performance of our philharmonics was, beyond doubt, world-class. Compliments to maestro Nayden Todorov for the idea, and above all for the implementation. The applause after the end showed, in itself, what the reaction of the audience was. What I can say is that we expect many more such projects in the future," he added.

Elfman's Cello Concerto was written especially for the French cellist, and the Sofia Philharmonic co-produced the work, as part of maestro Nayden Todorov's policy to return the Philharmonic to the world stage.

Gautier Capucon has his own foundation to support young and talented musicians at the beginning of their careers. One of the supported musicians is New Bulgarian University graduate Dogac Bezduz. On October 4, the cellist also gave a master class for Bulgarian cello students.

Modest Mussorgsky and Maurice Ravel's Pictures at an Exhibition was also included in the evening's programme on October 5.
