The third edition of Sofia DocuMental will take place between September 19 and 28 and it will showcase some of the best documentaries in the world, said the team of the international film festival which focuses on human rights.

The main theme this year is the defence of democratic values: freedom of speech and the fight against discrimination. After each screening, there will be a discussion with the film's crew or experts in the area touched upon in the film.

The festival is organized by the Balkan Documentary Center and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, in partnership with the Czech Center in Sofia and the Embassy of Czechia in this country.

Over 25 documentaries from Bulgaria, Europe and the world will be screened at the festival, including titles from world festivals - Berlinale, Cannes, Sundance, IDFA - Amsterdam, DokLeipzig. The films are focused on such topics as equality, ecology, media freedom, and important events like the war in Ukraine, the refugee crisis, political instability in Europe and the rise of far-right influences. Phenomena such as TikTok, Navalny and internet influencers are among the highlights.

The Bulgarian titles include The Cars We Drove into Capitalism (2020) and "The cars with which we invaded capitalism" and No Place for You in Our Town (2022).

Sofia DocuMental is also a creative laboratory for documentaries through its Balkan documentary market platform. It includes targeted trainings, internationally recognized authors, experts who support and affirm the role of documentary for the fair and critical development of society.

"The main goal of Sofia DocuMental is, through our programs for Bulgarian and international documentary cinema, to reach broader and younger audiences, and for Sofia to become one of the important European capitals for cinema. Our film festival will try to live up to its potential every year and - I'm sure - it will gradually become a strong international forum for interesting and innovative cultural events from all over the world," said director Marticka Bozhilova.
