Children will receive new books of their choice in exchange for five kilos of used paper for recycling in the tenth edition of the Used Paper for New Books initiative. This year’s event will be under the motto ‘Clean and Read’ and will be held in Ruse (on the Danube), Plovdiv (Central Bulgaria) and Sofia in September, the organizers said.

Every child who brings extra five kilograms of used paper will also receive the Guardians of the Planet book, which features tips on protecting the environment, such as composting, reducing use of plastics, cleaning beaches, and helping wildlife.

The initiative will start in Liberty Square [Ploshtad Svoboda] in Ruse on September 11. It will continue in Stefan Stambolov Square in Plovdiv on September 17 and in front of the Greenwich Book Center in Sofia on September 18. The Sofia event will be held under the patronage of Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and is part of Sofia Municipality’s 2022 cultural events calendar.

Nearly 56,000 children took part in the previous nine editions of the initiative, collecting some 297 tonnes of used paper in exchange for 65,770 books, the organizers also said.
