For the eighth year, the Green Libraries summer campaign is taking place in Sofia’s parks, the Sofia Municipality said in a press release on Monday. The initiative is organized by the Sofia Library to encourage reading from an early age.

There will be Green Libraries from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in South Park (August 13), Holy Trinity Park (August 14), West Park (August 20), Sofia Zoo (August 21), North Park (August 27), and in front of the Aleko hut in the Vitosha Mountain (August 28).

A mobile library bus, or Bibliobus, with some 1,500 new books by contemporary and classic authors, will lend books and issue free library cards.

Sofia Deputy Mayor Miroslav Borshosh said that some 150 new readers received their free library cards for the Sofia Library during the first weekend of August. Borshosh attended a Green Libraries event in the Sofia's Borisova Gradina park.

The programme also includes a book-sharing initiative. Visitors can donate books from their personal libraries, share them with the rest, take some that they have not read and get hold of of books from others' collections.

There will also be meetings with poets and their new books, thematic exhibitions and live musical performances.
