Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov will pay an official visit to Montenegro on September 8 and 9, 2025, the Government Information Service said on Sunday. Zhelyazkov will meet with his Montenegrin counterpart, Milojko Spajic, and President Jakov Milatović.
The agenda for the first day of the visit includes the signing of two documents aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. Zhelyazkov and Spajic will sign an agreement on scientific and technological cooperation, while the transport ministers of both countries, Grozdan Karadjov and Maja Vukicevic, will sign a bilateral declaration on transport cooperation, expressing mutual interest in establishing a direct air link between the capitals, Sofia and Podgorica.
On the occasion of Unification Day, observed on September 6, Prime Minister Zhelyazkov will unveil a bust of Prince Alexander I Battenberg at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Montenegro. One of Battenberg’s major contributions is the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, which took place 140 years ago, the Government Information Service added.
Zhelyazkov is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture to students at the university.
The official delegation will include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov, Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh, and Health Minister Silvi Kirilov. Each will meet with their Montenegrin counterparts.
On September 3, the Bulgarian government approved the signing of the scientific and technological cooperation agreement with Montenegro. The document outlines a framework for enhanced bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, with a focus on joint research projects funded by both countries, mobility of researchers, and the exchange of scientific data. Planned activities under the agreement include coordinated programmes and joint research projects, scientific seminars, conferences, and symposiums; exchanges of scientific and technical information and documentation; reciprocal access to research facilities and materials; and other forms of bilateral cooperation in science and technology.
