Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov Wednesday said that his Cabinet, in its coalition format, backed by a stable majority, has now set certain ambitious goals for raising Bulgarians' standard of living, looking well beyond the horizon of this government and its term in office. Zhelyazkov was speaking at the start of  the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers.

"We have many tasks to solve in the coming days and weeks. I would not like to get into a political polemic or reaction to the actions of political forces and institutions in recent days," Zhelyazkov said. "All the attacks on the Cabinet, which are heating up the autumn political situation, should not meet our reaction, because our view is beyond pettiness, beyond malice. We are following our clear governance programme. We implement policies, we do not engage in gossip," Zhelyazkov told the Council of Ministers.

According to the Prime Minister, there is "instability in terms of political consensus related to the balance between institutions." "This does not allow for the formation of bodies related to the protection of national security and our diplomatic service. This is a very dangerous precedent, because the balance that is prescribed by the Constitution and the laws is not just unbalanced: it is paralysed. Parliament's main concern is to try to restore that balance, with appropriate legislative changes. The government will not be the initiator of this because it is a participant in this balance. We believe that society needs the restoration of normal functioning and inter-institutional cooperation, as prescribed in the Bulgarian Constitution," Zhelyazkov underscored.

"For the Government, the political season is without a vacation. We are continuing our work in sectors and we are ready to take on any responsibility, including the political battles that are coming in the autumn," the Prime Minister said.
