GERB leader Boyko Borissov Friday ruled out an overhaul of the Cabinet, in which he takes charge of it. "I can be back at the helm via the established procedure," he said when reporters asked him in the corridors of Parliament if he can be expected to take the helm of the government in the event of positive converge reports on Bulgaria's readiness to join the eurozone.
The converge reports are expected to be put out by the European Commission and the European Central Bank in early June. Bulgaria hopes to join the eurozone as of the beginning of 2026.
"To overhaul the Cabinet at this moment would be absurd," Borissov added.
Asked if snap elections are to be expected after the convergence reports, he said that he is "carefully watching the situation". He reiterated that his party's top priority is to get the country into the eurozone "despite CC-DB".
"CC-DB" is the opposition Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria, GERB's partner in previous Parliaments, which is, actually, among the strongest advocates of Bulgaria's entry in the eurozone. While they do not support the GERB-dominated government, they have vowed never to back a no-confidence motion against it so as not to undermine Bulgaria's eurozone accession chances.
The staunchest opponents of eurozone entry are Vazrazhdane, MECh and Velichie.
