Velichie has initiated a 1,244-page motion of no confidence centred on environmental management, Floor Leader Ivelin Mihaylov said on Wednesday. Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) MPs signed the motion, while Vazrazhdane declined, he said.
The Constitution allows 48 MPs, one fifth of the National Assembly, to file a no-confidence motion. Velichie and MECH hold 21 seats together.
The document targets soil, water and pollution issues and what the authors call poor stewardship of those resources. Mihaylov estimated that pollution affects about 15,000 square kilometres of Bulgaria.
He said reports have been lodged for more than 6,100 landfills, with another 6,000 cases ready for the European Court. At a current fine of about EUR 500,000 per site, potential penalties could top EUR 6 billion.
Mihaylov added that Vazrazhdane’s refusal might stem from a conversation between GERB leader Boyko Borisov and Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov, and Borisov’s wish to avoid further no-confidence motions.
