Sofia Municipality Launches New Green Infrastructure Project to Improve Air Quality

Sofia Municipality will launch a new project to improve air quality by reducing fine particulate matter through development of green infrastructure focused on limiting secondary dust dispersion. The initiative, titled Green Measures for Cleaner Air in Sofia Municipality is funded under the EU’s Programme Environment 2021-2027 for Bulgaria, which is providing a grant of BGN 5,737,614.06, Sofia Municipality said in a press release on Monday.

By end-2026, the project will implement greening initiatives and install irrigation systems in key transport locations and residential areas across ten districts in Sofia.

Project activities include the creation and expansion of green spaces, planting of trees and shrubs, establishment of flower gardens, and other elements of green infrastructure. Additionally, modern irrigation systems will be installed to maintain the vegetation. The project will target strategic areas within the municipality, including:

  • Mladost 2 residential area near Aleksandar Malinov Blvd.
  • Tsar Boris III Blvd. and its adjacent pine garden
  • Obelya 2 residential area
  • Ovcha Kupel Blvd.
  • Areas surrounding the Sea World children’s playground in North Park
  • Todor Aleksandrov Blvd., Khan Kubrat Blvd., and several locations along Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd.
  • Cherni Vrah Blvd., in the section between Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi Blvd. and Srebarna Blvd.
  • Green facade landscaping at the First City Hospital
