The anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster was commemorated in Bulgaria with an initiative dubbed “Atoms for Peace - Green Planet.” A tree-planting event in the yard of Science Complex 2 of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in Sofia involved National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova, BAS President Evelina Slavcheva, BAS Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy Institute Director Dimitar Tonev, other BAS scientists, and senior executives of State Enterprise Radioactive Waste. It was organized by the Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy Institute.
After planting a tree, the National Assembly leader said: “We should view science as a preventer of technological accidents. We should wish for a revival of Bulgarian nuclear energy.” Nuclear energy must have a part in the development of the Bulgarian energy industry and Bulgarian science, Kiselova added, as quoted by the legislature's press office.
