Sofia's Economic Police have identified a man in possession of over BGN 1 million worth of excise goods lacking tax stamps, intended for distribution, Commissioner Yordan Peshev, head of the Sofia Economic Police Department, said at a news briefing on Wednesday.
"During a raid on Wednesday, we identified an individual who possessed and distributed excise goods without tax stamps. We found that these goods were stored in three garages and at the individual’s home. These items include hookah tobacco, vapes, nicotine lozenges, and laughing gas," Peshev said.
Based on the current evidence, there appear to be no drugs in the vapes and tobacco seized. More than 2,000 vapes have been found, the Commissioner added.
Most of the goods originated from Russia, and their potential impact on this country’s budget is estimated to be more than BGN 1 million. There is no information yet on how they made their way into Bulgaria, said Commissioner Nina Petkova, deputy head of the Third Precinct Police Department in Sofia.
She added that the man is 35 years old and had been arrested for possessing 400 kg of cut tobacco leaves a few months ago.
Commissioner Peshev said that they do not rule out the possibility of uncovering more violations during the investigation.
