President Rumen Radev will visit Poland on Monday, where he will attend the commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War II, the presidential press secretariat said.
The official delegation from Bulgaria led by President Radev includes Bishop Meletiy of Znepole, who will participate in a joint prayer service, together with representatives of other faiths, within the commemorative ceremony. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church played a significant role in saving the Jewish community in Bulgaria during World War II, the press release read.
The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established on the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Red Army on January 27, 1945. The commemoration ceremonies are traditionally attended by heads of state and government, representatives of international organizations, diplomats and Holocaust survivors, the head of state's press secretariat said.
The International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust has been marked since 2006 by a UN General Assembly resolution of November 1, 2005.
