The National Statistical Institute on Friday published a list of the most popular given names in Bulgaria as at the end of 2024.
The top 20 masculine given names are: Georgi (borne by 140,818 people), Ivan (127,848), Dimitar (103,073), Nikolai (86,699), Petar (61,068), Alexander (58,426), Hristo (48,998), Stefan (44,279), Yordan (41,492), Vasil (39,898), Krasimir (39,679), Stoyan (37,923), Todor (37,745), Atanas (37,622), Plamen (37,520), Angel (36,812), Martin (36,776), Ivailo (35,686), Nikola (33,622) and Valentin (30,311).
The top 20 feminine given names are: Maria (100,651), Ivanka (47,442), Elena (47,254), Yordanka (31,594), Daniela (29,314), Viktoria (28,877), Petya (28,190), Desislava (27,761), Rositsa (27,610), Gergana (27 269), Penka (25,168), Violeta (23,057), Margarita (22,923), Silvia (22,834), Rumyana (22,562), Emilia (22,554), Teodora (21,979), Milena (21,651), Tanya (21,573) and Galina (21,265).
Among infants born in 2024, the most popular masculine given names are Georgi (given to 782 boys), Alexander and Martin, and the most popular feminine given names are Viktoria (538), Maria and Sophia. These were the top names of newborns in previous years as well.
Ten years ago, the newborn girls' names list was dominated by Viktoria, Nikol and Maria, and the boys' list was topped by the same names as in 2024.
