Avalanche conditions are worsening due to significant snowdrift caused by strong winds, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross said here on Friday.

Hiking conditions in the high parts of the mountains are poor, with strong winds, clouds, fog, and snowdrifts, MRS said. Conditions in the lower parts, particularly in ski resorts, remain suitable for skiing, but the weather higher up is unfavourable.

There have been no incidents involving tourists in the past 24 hours, MRS added.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that cloud cover will increase from the northwest over the mountains on Saturday, with rain and snow expected later in the day in the western parts of the Balkans.

Moderate winds will blow from the west-southwest. Highs: around 6C at 1,200 m, minus 4C at 2,000 m.
