For the third consecutive year, on November 3 Bulgaria marks the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, declared under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme, the Ministry of Environment and Water said. It was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in its 41st session in 2021.

Events and initiatives on the occasion of the International Day for Biosphere Reserves started in the second half of October and will continue in November. Participating in the marking are the Central Balkan National Park Directorate, the Regional Inspectorates for Environment and Water (RIEWs) in Ruse, Plovdiv and Burgas, in cooperation with the National Committee of the Man and the Biosphere Programme.

In a joint initiative of RIEW - Ruse and the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, a wooden nesting platform for Dalmatian pelicans will be built in the Babushko swamp area in the core zone of the Srebarna Biosphere Reserve.

Between October 28 and November 1, the RIEWs in Ruse and Plovdiv had an Open Doors Week dedicated to the Srebarna and Chervenata Stena biosphere reserves.

Three festival events took place in the Directorate of the Central Balkan National Park - in Karlovo, in Troyan and in Sevlievo. They contribute to providing support to local producers, craftsmen and artists, as well as to promoting the Partner of the Central Balkan Biosphere Park initiative.

RIEW - Plovdiv presented to nature and travel lovers an information video focusing on sites of tourist interest.

Experts from the Directorate of Strandzha Nature Park gave presentations about the unique nature of the Uzunbudzhak Biosphere Reserve to children from the Mikhail Lakatnik Primary School in Burgas and to students from the Vasil Levski Secondary School specializing in Forestry in Malko Tarnovo.

There are four biosphere reserves in Bulgaria: Central Balkan, Chervenata Stena, Srebarna, and Uzunbudzhak, the Environment Ministry recalls. The Man and the Biosphere Programme attracts more and more visitors to the Bulgarian biosphere reserves and generates increased interest in the consumption of local products. The International Day for Biosphere Reserves promotes the opportunities that these areas provide so that more and more people become sympathetic to this concept, aimed at finding a balance between nature and Man.
