The Federation of Transport Trade Unions (FTTU) with the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) will take protest actions if the financial and other demands of Sofia public transport workers are not met, said press centre of the union on Monday.

Tensions arose after a meeting on October 4 with Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, and Deputy Mayor for Transport Iliyan Pavlov, which did not lead to a result. The meeting focused on the availability of financial resources to set in place an agreed bonus system for those working in municipal transport companies.

The FTTU calls for the implementation of a signed agreement with Sofia Municipality and the introduction of the agreed bonus system this year, an increase in average salaries by at least 15% from 2025 in sync with the expected increase in the minimum wage, as well as immediate payment of the funding owed by the state to the municipality.

If the demands are not heard, the FTTU will take protest actions immediately after the parliamentary elections.

At an extraordinary meeting on October 3, the Sofia Municipal Council accepted the granting of a loan of BGN 15 million for urban transport in Sofia.

Terziev explained that the main goal is to make it easier for the two municipal companies to provide the public transport service that is expected of them.

Regarding the bonus system for public transport workers, Terziev said that it will be discussed in its entirety with the budget update, which should happen at the end of October or the beginning of November.
