Commenting on the Bulgarian portfolio in Ursula von der Leyen's new European Commission on Tuesday, the Bulgarian Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva said that her portfolio, Startups, Research and Innovation, is incredibly important.

Zaharieva expressed gratitude to von der Leyen and to the Bulgarian Government for the confidence she was entrusted with and added that she is aware of the scope of her responsibility. She said: "The portfolio that Bulgaria received is one of the portfolios of the future. It is extremely important and at the heart of the current and the next Commission."

Zaharieva said that von der Leyen began her current term by prioritizing innovation and research. The Commissioner added: "We need to strengthen them to make our economy more competitive. That is to say, this is directly linked to increasing the competitiveness of the EU and the European economy."
